Virtual Book Launch - Yara's Spring
DATE(S) AND TIME(S):
Thursday, January 28, 2021, 4:00pm - 6:00pm
On Thursday January 28 2020, from 4pm to 6pm, InSight and the New Horizons Newcomer Youth Peer-Mentoring group, in collaboration with Newcomers Empowering Business, will host a Book Launch over Zoom featuring the authors of a newly released book, Yara’s Spring.
* Meet the renowned authors: Jamal Saeed and Sharon E McKay
* Readings and reflections from local newcomer youth and a local Syrian poet
* Door prizes
* And more…
This book is a thrilling, not-so-fictional account of a young woman escaping the Syrian Civil War in 2015.
Yara’s Spring came about as a collaboration between the two authors, Jamal Saeed and Sharon E. McKay and is a testament to the strength and beauty that comes through interculturalism. As Sharon writes:
“The more diverse voices, the more original stories, the stronger we will all be”
Jamal Saeed is a renowned Syrian writer, poet and novelist who arrived as a refugee in Kingston in 2016. He has been involved in the Kingston arts community over the years, and a participant in Newcomers Empowering Business, specifically offering Intercultural Intelligence workshops to volunteers. He is currently engaged in other writing projects, but Yara’s Spring is his Canadian publication.
Sharon E. McKay is an award winning Canadian young adult author, who’s published many books that feature youth living in conflict zones. “I had been to refugee camps on the Syrian border, interviewed many (list in acknowledgements) and had experience with resettling Syrian families,” says Sharon, “But it wasn’t until I met Jamal that the story came together... We decided to write a book – together,”
This event will include readings and reflections from local newcomer youth, and from Syrian poet (and Jamal’s wife) Rufaida Alakahbaz, and is a chance to meet the authors, and engage in a conversation that is sure to be unforgettable. There will be exciting “door” prizes, including copies of the book and more!
You don’t have to read the book to be a part of this exciting event, but if you’d like to purchase a copy, or learn more, you can do so at Kingston’s local, independent bookstore, Novel Idea. You can also purchase copies for home delivery directly through the publisher Annick Press (https://www.annickpress.com/Books/Y/Yara-s-Spring).
A Zoom link will be sent to all participants closer to the event date, so please register by sending an email to email@example.com, or by phone at 613-546-5559 ext. 345.
